NEXT BIG THING is a performance on productivity, work and value of artistic work. On the meaning and need of an artist’s work. On our own investment and profit. Next Big Thing is a show about frustration, pressure of the capital and the market. About leisure. About the ‘how’, but mainly about the ‘why’. It is the announcement of something about to happen, which will be better than the now. Something with which we will finally be satisfied. A pink future and a better life. The author is hoping we will live to see the Next Big Thing. Because if we fail, all our effort will be in vain.

The question is can an artist live off their work and do they deserve that, does economic value mean artistic quality and does an artist have to justify the value (as well as the price) of their artistic work. And, most importantly, who needs art and why.

IVANA KALC was born in Rijeka. After completing her studies in Rijeka (German Language and Literature and History), she moved abroad in 2003 to study contemporary dance (SEAD – Salzburg; Anton Bruckner Privatuniversitat – Linz, Austria). After obtaining her degree, she remained in Austria and worked as a dancer and a teacher in Austria and Germany. She obtained the DanceWEB scholarship (ImpulsTanz Festival) in Vienna in 2008. In 2009, she founded the artistic organisation Kabinet and started producing her own works (Markacije; Braća Kalc/Kamo sve to vodi?; Honestly, me; We’re in this together; Naša stvar). In 2010, she returned to Croatia and completely dedicated herself to working in the area of contemporary dance. That same year, she became the President of the Rijeka Croatian Dancers Association. In 2012, she became a member of the Croatian Freelance Artists Association as a freelance dance artist. She teaches at the Prostor Plus Association for Performing Arts and is a stage movement associate at the University of Rijeka (Acting and Media study programme). She has collaborated as a choreographer and performer with many Croatian and international artists and was a guest at various festivals in Croatia and abroad. She is the Director of the 2016 Periscope Festival of Contemporary Dance.
