Warp Renderings proposes different ways of engaging with the natural environment by revisiting and investigating the ideological twist that it has been subjected to throughout history. These distortions are exaggerated to the point of rupture, cracking and warping the canvas and the screen, creating fissures in the body, making it permeable and able to resonate with the natural elements it represents. Perhaps through this breaking of traditions – this conceptual vandalism – we can repair and restore our connection with nature, allowing it to spill back at us, or at least back into the dancing body. In this solo work, Sergiu Matis explores how aestheticized images of landscapes have distorted contemporary society’s relationship to the natural world, from the European landscape painting traditions and photography to satellite imagery and virtual reality.

Costume and stage objects consist of re-used and recycled materials. When on tour, the objects are not transported, but reassembled from the storage of the hosting institutions, giving the work a constantly shifting aesthetic that also reflects the history of each venue.
SERGIU MATIS is a Romanian choreographer living and working in Berlin since 2008. His work has been presented at institutions and festivals throughout Europe, including ImPulsTanz – Vienna International Dance Festival, Centre National de la Danse in Paris, PACT Zollverein in Essen, Trafó in Budapest and DansFabrik in Brest. He has led workshops and educational activities at a range of institutions worldwide. In 2014, he completed his masters in “Solo/Dance/Authorship” at the Inter-University Centre for Dance Berlin (Hochschulübergreifendes Zentrum Tanz – HZT).
