Marta Kolega i Dunja Bahtijarević: Pjesme (concert)

Marta Kolega and Dunja Bahtijarević are poets and singers with a long and varied history of encounters and collaborations. Their dedication to poetry and traditional songs has merged into a unique project that pushes the boundaries of both music and poetry, oscillating on the edge and creating unusual frequencies. Their album Pjesme (Songs) is a fusion of traditional tunes and original poetry – songs in one sense of the word, and songs in another. Their Songs are and are not poetry; they are and are not music. This fusion arose from a desire to unite the two fields in which they work without adding new elements such as electronics or instruments, showing that the voice alone is a sufficiently expressive medium. A traditional song remembers the voices of all those who have sung it through the centuries. For a singer, it offers the chance to slip into another skin, to speak in someone else’s language, to come closer to another’s experience. Traditional songs are like a vast collective archive containing all possible human experiences, while the written poetry expresses their individual ones. In this project, two worlds meet: the personal experience finds support and resonance within the collective memory preserved in the traditional song.
